October 14, 2026 — The final numbers are in: Other Mommy opened at No. 1 at the US box office with $27,805,825 in its first weekend (October 9–11), ending Verity’s one-week reign and confirming what Sunday’s estimates suggested — horror owned the weekend again.
The finals sharpened the picture. Verity, the Dakota Johnson thriller that took the crown last weekend, fell 63 percent to $12,005,559 for second place, with a two-week domestic total of $54.38 million. Resident Evil slipped to third at $8,563,158 — a gentler 32 percent dip — and its four-week domestic run of $138.7 million remains the stronger horror performance of the autumn. Box Office Pro’s Sunday studio estimates had pegged the opening at $27.5 million, making the final number slightly stronger than the industry expected.
The people behind the race
The result is a win for Jessica Chastain, who stars in the Rob Savage-directed film for Universal, and it came against the odds. Moviefone reported that the $18 million production survived a rough critical reception to open in 3,365 theaters with a per-screen average of $8,172. Opposite it, Verity’s Dakota Johnson-led adaptation, co-starring Anne Hathaway, could not hold the momentum of its opening weekend, and the Amazon MGM release watched its lead evaporate in seven days.
What the numbers say about the genre
Two different horror titles have now topped the chart in consecutive weeks, and Resident Evil’s $138.7 million four-week run shows audiences keep buying tickets for scares even when reviews are mixed. Other Mommy’s opening — more than double Verity’s weekend — also exposes how steep a 63 percent second-week drop is for a film that only just claimed the top spot: one week is not a reign, it is a rental.
Beyond the box office, the week’s entertainment calendar has kept audiences busy elsewhere, from Ella Langley’s cancelled Tulsa show to Charli XCX closing out Austin City Limits‘ 25th anniversary weekend. And the box-office chart itself keeps turning over, with The Social Reckoning and Angel and the Badman joining the top ten as new releases this weekend.
