Lanes reopened on I-39/90 between Janesville and Beloit

An update from DOT just after 9 p.m.All lanes have reopened on I-39 NB/SB at I-39 – I-90 in Rock County near Beloit. Wisconsin State Patrol says 85 vehicles were involved and 21 people were taken to area hospitals. Update from Wisconsin State Patrol at 8 p.m. Friday all southbound lanes near milepost 181 has reopened. The Northbound lanes remained closed for nearly nine hours.”It just kind of turned into whiteout conditions. The roads were slick,” said Julie Brady. Brady said she was traveling to Illinois when she was caught in the pileup.”All of the sudden, it was a pileup. You could just see that it was a pileup. Cars everywhere So I slid and was able to avoid hitting a pickup truck right in front of me,” Brady said. At 12:30 p.m. a multiple-car crash happened on I-39 NB/SB at I-39 – I-90 in Rock County near Beloit.”On our way home the roads were pretty bad and start seeing cars get on the brakes and the next thing you know, we were sliding trying to avoid an accident. We ended up catching one other car right here on the shoulder and seen the pileup coming and we just ran away from the car,” said Trevor Nelson.Nelson’s car was in the pileup.Nelson and Brady both waited in their cars for hours on a tow as crews worked their way through the wreckage.At 4:48 p.m., Beloit Memorial Hospital confirms they have received 27 patients.According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the crash was related to severe winter weather conditions with snow, ice and whiteout conditions. WISN 12 News asked Nelson to describe the scene.”Chaos, it was crazy, it was a scene out of a movie, to be honest with you,” Nelson said.WisDOT asked travelers to avoid the area while state patrol and other authorities assisted motorists involved, investigated the crash and worked to clear the roadway.”It’s just kind of surreal. I’m thankful that I’m fine and don’t have any injuries,” Brady said. This is an ongoing story.
