Golden State’s expansion dream refuses to behave like one. The Valkyries beat the Las Vegas Aces 83–81 on Wednesday night in Game 2 of their WNBA semifinal, and the shot that will live on the highlight loop belonged to Veronica Burton: a go-ahead three-pointer with 41 seconds left that pushed the league’s newest franchise within one win of the Finals.

The finish was a duel of closers. Las Vegas leaned, as it always does, on A’ja Wilson, who poured in 24 points and dragged the two-time champions back within touching distance every time Golden State threatened to open daylight. The Valkyries answered with balance instead of a superstar: Tiffany Hayes scored 21, Courtney Williams 20, and Kayla Thornton 16, a committee of scorers that kept the Aces’ defence from loading up on any single threat.

That balance has become Golden State’s identity in a postseason that was supposed to be a learning exercise. Expansion teams are meant to collect experience and lottery positioning. The Valkyries have instead collected wins with defence, depth and a home crowd that has treated every playoff game like a coronation rehearsal. Two games into a semifinal against the league’s standard-bearer, none of it looks accidental.

For Las Vegas, the arithmetic is now unforgiving. Down 2–0 in the series, the Aces must win three straight against a team that has beaten them with late execution twice in a row — and must rediscover, quickly, the closing gear that defined their championship runs. Wilson’s 24 points were nearly enough on Wednesday; nearly, in a semifinal, compounds fast.

Game 3 will tell whether this is an upset in progress or the prologue to a great escape. Either way, the Valkyries have already authored the postseason’s defining image so far: a first-year team, a borrowed superstar’s shot chart spread across four scorers, and Burton’s three hanging in the air with 41 seconds between Golden State and the brink of the Finals.
