Matthew McConaughey has a message for voters tired of both parties: give independents a real shot. The Oscar winner posted a six-minute video to his X account on Sunday urging Americans to take independent candidates seriously in the 2026 midterm elections.

“Independents belong in the fight. Not as a protest, not as a spoiler, but as a real and potential winner on the ballot and considered seriously by us,” McConaughey said in the clip, which reached his 2.8 million followers, according to reports.

Not middle of the road

McConaughey challenged the stereotype that independent voters simply sit on the fence. “Independent does not mean you’re middle of the road. Independent is the original road. Before there was ever a Republican or Democrat, there was an American,” he said, according to reports.

The Interstellar star reached for a football analogy, as a devoted Texas Longhorns fan: “Independents keep the game between the 40s where most of America actually lives. Independents don’t just have leverage; they actually are the leverage,” he said. He pointed to polling showing 45 per cent of Americans identify as independents, and name-checked former Senator Joe Manchin’s organisation aimed at electing more of them.

A fair fight, not an endorsement

McConaughey was explicit that he was not backing any candidate. “I am not here today to endorse a candidate or a party,” he said. “I am here endorsing two things: fairness and reality.” He proposed three to five independent senators as a “toll booth” for overly partisan legislation, a permanent check on both parties, according to reports.

Politics is not new territory for the actor: he explored running for Texas governor in 2021 and visited the White House after the Uvalde school shooting in 2022 to urge bipartisan gun safety measures. Critics of his latest message warned that backing independents could split votes in high-stakes midterm races.
