Taylor Swift Debuts The Fate of Ophelia Live at the Academy Museum Gala
Taylor Swift gave fans a first listen on Saturday night, performing “The Fate of Ophelia” live for the very first time at the sixth annual Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. The song, a centerpiece of her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl, had never been played on stage before, making the gala set a genuine premiere for the star-studded audience, according to Rolling Stone India.
Comedian Conan O’Brien introduced her with one of the evening’s most quoted lines, calling Swift “John, Paul, George, and Ringo all in one,” before she opened a four-song closing set with “Blank Space.” She then told the crowd they were about to witness the debut of a Showgirl track, before closing with her Toy Story 5 song “I Knew It, I Knew You” and “Love Story.”
A $14 million night for the museum
The gala, held in partnership with Rolex, is the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ flagship fundraiser, and Vogue reported it raised more than $14 million this year. The evening honored Charlize Theron with the Icon Award, John Carpenter with the Luminary Award and Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award, and was co-chaired by Tom Ford, Steven Spielberg, Robert Rodriguez and Kate Capshaw.
Swift made an entrance long before she sang. She walked the red carpet in a strapless pale-blue Dior gown designed by Jonathan Anderson with Chopard jewellery, a look that topped best-dressed lists the next morning. Guests included Sabrina Carpenter, Kim Kardashian, Demi Moore, Jacob Elordi and Ana de Armas, among many others.
Why the timing matters
The performance lands at a busy moment for the singer. Music writers have noted that the gala, which arrived just before Oscars voting season, put her directly in front of Hollywood’s most influential figures, with her Toy Story 5 song seen as a possible contender for Best Original Song at the 2027 Academy Awards. She is also due to be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame later this month.
The weekend showed her juggling both worlds. One day after the gala, she was back in her usual suite at Arrowhead Stadium, watching the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 22-6 alongside WNBA star Caitlin Clark and musician Este Haim, her third Chiefs home game of the season. From farewell tours to surprise live debuts, it has been a packed few weeks for live music, and Swift managed to be at the center of it twice in two days.
